We offer both seeds and plants from our 2009 harvest. They are ready to plant this fall for spring blooms. Chatelaine lupines grow to heights of three feet, and provide a touch of color and elegance to any border. Lupine seeds can be germinated in many ways, but they need a period of cold or stratification in order to germinate. The can be planted in the fall or placed in a refrigerator for a period of time in order to mimic a cold winter. We usually place ours in a moist paper towel , enclose them in in baggie and let them sit for three weeks to a month in the refrigerator. Then we plant them in a small pot filled with organic potting soil and cover the pot with a baggie to create a humid environment. Once they become large enough we plant them outside.
The plants can be planted now with no special treatment. They will be shipped bare root in a growing medium in late summer and early spring.
Lupines do best in full sun, and they do well in rich well drained soil. Adding a 2-3 inch layer of organic compost helps them get off to a good start, keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They are a perennials and will return year after year. Each order will contain planting instructions for both the seeds or the plants.
