My mother gave me my first Magic Lillies back in 1986. I have treasured and cultivated these lillies since then. Upon my mothers passing in 1988 they became even more special every year that they bloom.The five to seven pink four inch long trumpets are produced atop the pale, naked three foot tall stems.
The foliage comes up in late winter and looks like a large-leafed clump of daffodils, but without flowers.The leaves die away with the arrival of the first warm days of late spring, usually disappearing below ground by late May.
In late July to early August the Magic Lily begins to make it show. As if by magic the lily will pop it's way through the soil and grow quickly on a tall stalk. Then it blooms the most glorious bloom. My children were always delighted when they were young when our Magic Lillies would bloom.
Magic Lilies (Lycoris squamigera) first appeared in the American garden trade in about 1880, but they have been cultivated for centuries in Japan. It was originally misidentified and sold under the name Amaryllis halli. The name "halli" probably refers to Dr. George R. Hall of Bristol, RI who spent time in Japan after the Civil War.
