Maple Wind Farm, nestled against the spine of the Green Mountains in northern Vermont, is a diversified pasture-based farm specializing in grassfed and finished beef and lamb; and pastured organic pork and poultry. Organic eggs, some vegetables, maple syrup and wood products are also produced on the farm. Farm tours and visits are welcome and available by appointment, and the farm sports two large heated yurts for rent to those who want to extend their stay. An eight week farm-based summer daycamp is available for local 7 to 13 year olds. Learning opportunities for interns and apprentices are available during the grazing season. Committed to environmentally sustainable practices, the farm receives up to 75% of it's electricity from a 10kW wind turbine.

With the weather warming and sap flowing, we're looking ahead to the day when grass shoots poke up through our pastures. We have many new ideas and projects to work on as we head into spring.
For the first time, Maple Wind Farm will cultivate small grains, but instead of taking them off for the grain, we plan to graze our cows on the high energy feed while the plant is still growing, before the seeds develop. Our plan is to pilot a project where we eventually eliminate the need (and fuel and machinery) to make hay for the winter, but instead graze our cows and sheep through the winter on winter-hardy cereal rye.
May 1, we'll receive 100 Katahdin ewe lambs as breeding stock for a more robust lamb program. We've produced grassfed lamb of a variety of breeds for several years, and have found that the Katahdin best suits our farm. Katahdins are hair sheep that shed their coats in the spring. No shearing, tail docking or foot trimming is needed, and their delicious mild-tasting flavor and ease of growth on grass make them ideal.
We'll also be opening a new farm store in conjunction with our partners on the Andrews Farm in Richmond, VT. Located on busy Route 2, just one mile south of Richmond, the store resides in the Andrew's historically preserved 200 year old gray barn. Not only will we sell our healthy and delicious meats, vegetables and syrup, but many local crafts, antiques, fresh fruits and pies will also be available. We'll be open most weekends so come see us!
