Local Farm Joins National Challenge

Meadow Mist Farm in Lexington is the first Massachusetts farm to join the Soil Carbon Challenge, an international competition to measure how quickly land managers can turn atmospheric carbon into soil organic matter. This effort can contribute to reversing climate change, according to the Soil Carbon Coalition, a non-profit agency. Peter Donovan, an Oregon farmer, is spearheading this competition by traveling the country in a bus and enlisting farmers and other land managers to join the challenge by collecting data on the quality of their soil and submitting it to this international study. According to Donovan, our greatest hope in breaking the cycle of global warming and groundwater evaporation is to get more carbon into the soil.

John Moriarty of Meadow Mist Farm said, "When this test is repeated in another five or ten years, it will be a good indicator of the health of the soil, and will help us learn what kinds of practices could have contributed to soils getting better or worse over time."
