The palatial Mimosa tree on the south side of our farmhouse is my favorite tree in the world. When we moved to the farm 15 years ago, it was about the size of a large room. Now it is larger than the house. It is a fabulous shade tree, and throughout July and August, its stunning pink blossoms perfume our yard and feed large flocks of hummingbirds. On a typical late summer morning, we can look up in its flowering branches and watch 20-30 hummingbirds feasting on the nectar.

So, if you love hummingbirds and butterflies, plant one near your porch or patio! Or anywhere you need a small- to medium-sized ornamental.

Mimosa trees grow rapidly, normally to about 20-25 ft., but larger in ideal conditions. They look like a tropical plant but are very hardy, and adapt to almost any soil type. They also tolerate drought and can thrive in full sun or partial shade.

Introduced in 1745 from their native habitat of Iran to Japan, Mimosas now widely populate the Southeast and lower Midwest.
