Motherwort has a long history of use as a nervine sedative and bitters. It is often used in formulas for heart palpitations or over-rapid heartbeat, especially when brought on by stress and anxiety. It is used in heart conditions that are associated with anxiety and tension and “strengthens and regulates heartbeat and regulates hyperactive thyroid.” (Cech, Making Plant Medicine). Motherwort is a valuable as a cooling and calming uterine tonic and is often used to bring on delayed or suppressed menstrual cycle where there is anxiety, tension or irritability.
