Interesting Facts About Heirloom Barred Plymouth Rocks:

Are "Heritage Breed" Chickens that were developed and selectively bred in America in the Mid 1800's and were the First Breed of Chicken to be Recognized by and Admitted to the American Poultry Association ( APA ) in 1874

The American Livestock Breed Conservancy
( ALBC ) defines a 'Heritage' or 'Heirloom' Breed Chicken as follows:

A Heritage Egg can only be produced by an American Poultry Association Standard breed.

A Heritage Chicken is hatched from a Heritage Egg sired by an American Poultry Association Standard breed established prior to the mid-20th century, is slow growing, naturally mated with a long productive outdoor life.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy has over 30 years of experience, knowledge, and understanding of endangered breeds, genetic conservation, and breeder networks.

*** BARRED PLYMOUTH ROCK CHICKENS ***

Lay Large Brown Eggs Beginning About 5 Months of Age

Lay Five to Six Eggs Per Week Even During the Winter Months Without Light Added to Simulate Longer Day Lenth

Are Mild Mannered, Moderately Active, Friendly, Vocal, Inquisitive and Easily Handled

Adapt Equally Well to Cage Free and/or Free Range Environments

Hens Weigh Seven to Eight Pounds at Maturity and Roosters Eight to Nine Pounds

Handle Cold and Hot Weather Equally Well and, as such,
are the Perfect Breed of Choice for either the Homestead, Farm or Urban Locations in Georgia

Are a Large "Dual Purpose" Breed Which Means that They are Excellent for Both Egg Production and/or Meat

The Barred Plymouth Rock is a true American Breed started in the mid 1800's by crossing Black Java pullets with a common single combed barred cock ~

The breed quickly became popular because of their positive attributes such as consistently high egg production, excellent meat quality and hardiness - all highly desirable traits for the Farm or Homestead chicken flock
