(Cucumis melo var. reticulatus)
80 days from transplant, 92 days from seed. [Developed about 1935 by seedsman Aaron Pike of Pike and Young, Monmouth, Oregon.] Pure seed of this heirloom variety was sent to seedsman Jeff McCormack by the niece of Aaron Pike who provided information on the origin and development of 'Pike' muskmelon. It was developed by crossing 'Hearts of Gold' with 'Spear' and was selectively bred for production on un-irrigated clay soil. The heavily netted, orange-fleshed fruits average 3 pounds when grown in clay soil, and 6-1/2 pounds on well-irrigated melon soil. On good melon soil the fruits average 7" x 9". 'Pike' is an outstanding variety due to its hardiness, dependability, disease resistance, yield, and flavor. The fruits are flavorful and sweetly aromatic. When grown on clay soil 'Pike' produces a firmer flesh.
