The nuts from indigenous Chestnut, Hickory, and Walnut trees have long been neglected in favor of commercial nut crops like English walnuts and pecans. With the renewed interest in local foods, people are rediscovering these flavorful nuts that were a staple food for Native Americans for millenia.
We offer this assortment of Chestnuts, Black Walnuts, and Hickory nuts for your authentic traditional dishes this holiday season. The Chestnuts -- a prominent part of the fall diet in America until a blight introduced in 1904 killed most of the native trees -- are both wild-harvested from our woods, and cultivated in our fruit and nut grove. The Hickory and Black Walnut trees have been planted all over our farm and woods by the industrious squirrels (we give them corm in exchange when we take their nuts!).
These nuts come hulled but in the shell. We hope you will enjoy them!
Our yarns, nuts, and particularly our garden seeds, make perfect holiday gifts in synergy with our shared goals of environmental protection, sustainability, and food security.
