At Open Book Farm we practice regenerative agriculture by focusing on soil health, livestock well-being, and direct-to-consumer sales.
We raise laying hens, broiler chickens, turkeys, and pigs by rotationally grazing them on pasture during the spring, summer, and fall. In winter, we keep our hens and pigs on a deep-bedded pack in our loafing shed. This allows us to store and compost their manure, as well providing them with shelter during the roughest months of the year. We process our chickens and turkeys on site in an open air abattoir, thereby saving the birds from the stress of transportation to slaughter.
We fertilize our vegetables with the composted manure from our livestock. We use no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides on our crops. We build soil health with cover crops and crop rotation.
We eschew certification in part due to cost, but primarily because we invite our customers to certify the farm for themselves by visiting and asking questions . We will happily explain any aspect of our operation to you, and no part of our farm is off limits (other than our home, that is!) We wholesale a small quantity of produce through Frederick area restaurants and caterers. Occasionally, especially in August, we have an excess of certain crops which we are willing to sell to individuals at wholesale prices.
