Grassy Acres Farm is a diversified, independent family farm located in the Carrsville area of Western Tidewater. We specialize in pasture raised, heritage breed poultry and pork. Our mission is to raise delicious tasting heritage breed animals in a manner that promotes their wellbeing and the health of the land and our local community. Bourbon Reds are a heritage breed turkey that matures to between 18 & 33 lbs. In a 2008 blind taste test, eight Heritage Turkeys "kicked a Butterballs Butt."
In the study, reported in Mother Earth News by Don Schrider, 70 people compared one industrial and eight heritage varieties of turkey. The food professionals, chefs, food writers and food connoisseurs in attendance all had one thing in common, an interest in great food. The turkeys were scored based on flavor, texture, tenderness, aroma and appearance. The second place winner in this historical tasting was the Bourbon Red turkey.
