Pennyroyal is often considered a remedy for indigestion, liver and gallbladder complaints and skin inflammations, although there is no scientific proof of its effectiveness. It has also been used for gout, colds, and excessive urination, again, without validation. It has been prescribed by Homeopaths for cramps and respiratory problems. The plant is very aromatic and its fragrance has been credited with medicinal properties by the Roman scholar Pliny.
The reasons for Pennyroyal's therapeutic effects, if any, are unknown, but there's no question that it contains highly potent compounds. Although an overdose can be fatal, Pennyroyal oil (not the dried leaves) has been used to induce abortions.
Unless you are an experienced herbalist, leave this one alone - except in small amounts as a food flavoring or an occasional cup of tea. Acute poisoning from the dried herb is unlikely, but as little as 5 grams (about 1 teaspoonful) of Pennyroyal oil can cause vomiting, high blood pressure, paralysis or even death. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
