Philadelphia Catholic Social Services Farm to School Program
There is a lot of interest in farm to school within Pennsylvania. A variety of governmental agencies and community organizations are involved in some way. However, a barrier in arranging successful business relationships between local farmers and local schools has been finding farmers with large enough volumes. Pennsylvanian farmers and local schools have been primarily connected through educational events. Nevertheless, there are many educational institutions that procure from local farmers.
One established farm to school program exists within Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese/Catholic Social Services, which serves meals daily at 150 Catholic and charter schools in the Philadelphia area. Additionally, farm to college is prevalent in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture, a nonprofit statewide, member-based, sustainable farming organization has taken the led on farm to college efforts.
