The Giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea) is a puffball mushroom commonly found in meadows, fields, and deciduous forests worldwide usually in late summer and autumn. We find these around our farmhouse after fall rains.
Puffballs have a rich, penetrating, earthy flavor. They are very fleshy, almost meat-like in their texture. These gourmet mushrooms won't get lost in a recipe, even when there are lots of other ingredients or strong seasonings.
Puffballs stand up to virtually every form of cooking. You can sauté them, simmer them in soups, cook them with grains, and even bread and bake them in a casserole if they're large enough. They generally cook in about 7-15 minutes. To store long-range, cook and freeze them.
We will ship these gourmet delights to you overnight via Express Mail.
