Rainfield Farm

The farm is ran by Shane Hansen who after five years of working at community gardens and farmers markets in Chicago fell in love with farming and made the move to the farm in 2012. Rainfield Farm is a small-scale farm which consists of 13 acres. Currently 2 acres are being used for growing produce and a 1 acre orchard. The fields are strategically placed to minimally impact the natural landscape of pines and rolling hills.

We practice organic growing methods which prevent us from using pesticides and synthetic chemicals. We rely heavily on composting and soil conditioning through cover crops, green manure, and crop rotations. Organic certification will be obtained in 2015.

On the farm were growing 70+ varieties of produce along with apples, peaches, herbs and flowers. We also have 30 chickens for fresh organic eggs. You can stop out at our onsite Farmstand which is open weekends May-October or visit us at the Uptown Marketplace in Michigan City on Saturday mornings.

We regularly host volunteer days and interns during the summer to educate people about farming and sustainability. Occasionally we have WWOOFers that visit for a few weeks to a couple months throughout the year as well. Please contact us to inquire more about these opportunities.
