Real Food for Real People

We are buidling economic self sufficiency for urban poor through community gardens and local access to regional farm producers of local produce. This is a multigenerational/multicultural community project. Parents, Neighbors, Youth, Grandparents and Children of many ethnic groups are involved in this Local Food Initiative. Poor community health damages the individual and creates a huge economic cost for society at large. A key factor in poor health is poor nutrition. The poor, in the Oakhill-Jackson neighborhood, as well as the nation at large consume primarily cheap, processed commodity based foods. The purpose of this grant application is to build effective local food systems where the poor in our neighborhood produce a portion of their own food in community gardens and access local fresh produce in our region of Iowa. This is a life changing and community changing project. We are totally committed to this effort. This effort will take place on a "bootstrap basis" with or without a Case Foundation Grant, however, your assistance can amplify our effectiveness, and make the Oakhill Jackson/Linn County Iowa local food project a national model with far reaching impact.
