ReRide Ranch is located just one hour from down town Los Angeles on the oak and pine covered Liebre Mountain of north Los Angeles County. The Sandberg Ranch, as it is known locally, was started in 1897 by the Sandberg family which had an orchard of over 2000 apple trees. They picked and delivered the apples, using the Old Ridge Route to Los Angeles in the early 1900's. Some of the original apple trees, estimated to be 80 to 85 years old, still grow and produce great tasting apples in the "back 80" without irigation or pruning. Today we only have a small mixed fruit orchard.
The main focus of our operation is to raise local, naturally grown, pasture raised pigs. We offer our customers two different types of pork.
The Yorkshire/Hampshire cross pigs are fed to be a lean pork, which is preferred by most people. They are fed a whole, healthy feed using milk and crops from the San Joaquin Valley, along with fallen apples in the orchard where they're housed. The other pigs raised here, live under the oaks, to eat the acorns, along with their special formula. They are registered American Berkshires, a heritage breed, known for their flavorful meat, being tender and moist. The Berkshire, highly prized in Japan where it is known as Kurobuta, is finally getting it's recognition in the United States.
We have whole and half hogs to sell; cut and wrapped, as ordered, at a local inspected plant. We are in the process of getting a USDA label for fresh packaged pork to sell , unlike most everything else which is shipped frozen from the midwest.
JUST IN McCalls Meat and Fish Co. is now carrying local raised Kurabuto, Our fresh Berkshire pork.
