A Great Find

By:    (May 20, 2009)

This farm is off the beaten path and a little hard to find, but it is well worth the visit. I arrived unannounced on an afternoon in early May. Annie took the trouble to come out of her home and show me around the place before picking some vegetables for me straight from the greenhouse. I went home with a bunch of spinach, some radishes, and a dozen eggs from the free-range hens. The hen house and barnyard were clean and the chickens looked healthy and happy. The spinach was light green and tender and tasted delicious sauteed in olive oil with garlic. The radishes were very crisp with just the right amount of bite and no bitterness like some of the tough, oversized radishes from the grocery store. The next day I made a fritatta with the leftover spinach and fresh brown eggs. This is a well-run business by people who respect the land and the creatures who provide our food.
