CSA Share
By: Michele L Dinsmore    (Jan 4, 2012)

My family participated in the 2011 Farm Share season, and received a generous, bushel-sized share each week, often enough for this fruit-and-veggie-loving family to share. In previous seasons, we had participated in share programs with other farms and were disappointed in the quality/quantity of the products recieved, in dripping bags, some times not even sorted out when we arrived, after driving a long way for pick-up. However, the items that we received from from Manahoac were always freshly picked (carefully packed in waxed boxes, that they collected for reuse/recycling on a weekly basis) and even included a few garden critters to prove it! The farmers who delivered our share to University Mall were always friendly and eagerly entertained farming/gardening questions from my inquisitive children. While the season ended early, and rather abruptly, due to the extremely high heat/drought (don't forget - the 2011 summer set several records for high temps and extended heat waves, and we went several weeks without rain!), we do feel that we got our money's worth out of our participation in the program because of the bounty that we brought home each week that the farm operated, which far exceed what it would have cost to buy a similar amount at grocery store. We hope that Manahoac was able to recover from such a rough season and we look forward to participating again in 2012 and beyond.
