Wonderful CSA and Farm Experience!
By: Dawn Patterson (Jan 4, 2012)
We have been members at Thorn Crest for three years now, and Maureen and Gary are wonderful to work with! Typically, the weekly share is enough to eat, and extra to share or put up for the post-season. Some people share/split the membership with another family if they can't use it all, but many just enjoy the bounty and learn techniques to freeze, dry and/or can the excess. The best thing about it is how hard Maureen and Gary work to make the shares a good value. It isn't just a box of veggies, filled each week, it truly is the output of the farm that you are sharing. They focus on the CSA, not farmers markets and restaurant supply, so what you get is truly a share of the farm's produce, not a portion of what's left after they have pulled out what they want to sell at the market. The first couple year's that was an incredible amount, and an unbelievable value. At the height of the season, it could be four or more large-sized reusable grocery bags (like the fold up Lunds/Byerlys bags). Last year they had a tough season with the cold spring weather, the ultra-hot mid-summer, and the droughty late summer, but still it was a decent value, and Maureen and Gary did all they could to make it so. The farm is family friendly, and if you can, do farm pickup, it is the best way to get the full experience and the most produce, but any way you do it will be a good value! They are also responsive to member needs and requests, offering lots of extra Upick, considering new varieties folks request, and starting a newsletter and listserv to address member questions and recipe requests. We've been members of two other CSAs (and toured two others before choosing), and while I liked both that we worked with, and enjoyed the farmers,Thorn Crest is the very best value out there. Can you tell I can't say enough good things about Thorn Crest? If you are considering joining, visit the farm during their Fall Festival or Christmas in the Country celebrations! It is the warmest most inviting place!
