Best Heirloom Apples in the Pacific NW!

By: Josh Alsberg    (Mar 1, 2012)

As the Produce Buyer for Food Front Cooperative Grocery in Portland, I have been working with Tommie and Peter for 2 years, and they have been selling to our stores for many more.

We LOVE their apples! They have dozens of varieties and we sell many of them at our stores. My personal favorite is the Rubinette...juicy, sweet and tart with the perfect crunch! They have a wonderful selection of eating apples including crowd pleasers like Honeycrisp, Braeburn and Cox Orange Pippen, as well as some lovely cooking apples like the Belle de Boskoop and the Bramley. Check out the hard-to-find Blue Pearmain...it's a tart one with a beautiful purple-ish skin and clean white flesh!

And if you're lucky enough to get some, try to go to their farm and pick up some of the Apple cider vinegar. It's fresh out of the keg with the mother! Really good in curing my acid reflux issues.

If you miss the opportunity to go to their farm, we'll be sampling their apple varieties during our apple tasting in October. Go to our website at www.foodfront.coop for more info as October approaches.

Ooops, apparently a correction is needed. The Blue Pearmain is sweeter than I recall... and it's the Cox's Orange Pippen. my apologies for the misinformation!
