High Quality, Amazing Value
By: Melanie    (Aug 10, 2008)

Freehome Gardens is such a valuable asset to our community. A gem of phenomenal produce!!! Maryanne and Harold have created a wonderful way for those of us without time or garden know how to eat healthy and really experience food in a way you just can't at a grocery store. The varieties that they have and the abundance of produce is a joy to discover every week!!

My whole family LOVES the CSA, the amazing produce we get every week and the opportunity to LEARN how to use new items. How sad that some people miss out on this amazing farm!!!!

I love it!
By: rebecca    (Jul 21, 2008)

I look forward to every Wednesday during the spring and summer season. This is our second year of joining the Freehome Gardens CSA and we couldn't be more thrilled.

The garden has such a great variety of vegetables, from your typical standard fare (okra, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, greens, carrots, etc.) to some heirloom varieties and unusual foods! This is what I love about the garden. It has challenged me and encouraged me to try new things then what I was typically used to. I have enjoyed trying varieties of beets and radishes - things I never would have done before as well as eating my greens (swiss chard, kale, mustard greens, collard greens.) It has also helped me get my husband to eat more vegetables then your standard veggies (green beans, squash, and tomatoes!)

This year we challenged ourselves to get through all the vegetables before they went bad - my husband and I split the weekly amount with another couple so we don't waste any food and we are freezing more food then last year. In order to keep us using all of the vegetables, I have gotten into the kitchen and have started making my own pesto and spaghetti sauce and freezing it.

A bummer
By: Karen    (Jul 2, 2008)

We had such high hopes for this, but we have yet to get enough food to do anything with. It is the first of July and we still have not gotten any tomatoes or normal vegetables. No squash, no tomatoes just weird stuff. No broccolli.

We get somethings that are HUGE and not really usable. This was the biggest waste of money! There is never enough to even cook a meal with. These are not normal southern vegetables!

Obviously this person does not know how to cook or know the value of a dollar! I have been purchasing from Freehome Gardens/ Maryanne for a long time and have NEVER been disappointed! As for "normal" southern vegetables.... do you want them to batter, fry it and serve it for you???? Get a grip.... Normal veggies are what they grow and supply to us at an incredible value!!! I am glad you don't like what you got... it makes room in her very exclusive CSA for those of us that appreciated what they do and how amazingly awesome their produce is!!!

Eating locally and seasonally is something we all have to re-learn how to do...weird stuff, unusable...most likely some great greens that are oh! so good for you! I love discovering new and different varieties of fresh food through CSA's. The industrialized food system has trained us to think that what we find in the supermarkets is what is normal...IT is NOT!

Wonderful variety, consistent harvest!

I've been participating in the Free Home Garden summer program for 2 years and love it! I cannot wait for the season to start, especially when I see the higher prices at the grocery store!I'm always surprised by the variety of produce and the great taste...it sure beats store bought! Most of the grocery-store products lack flavor, the produce from the garden is amazing! Maryanne always tries to include a great recipe for some of the produce that her garden grows, and we even receive some lovely flowers in our bags!

Early weeks in the season tend to be lighter, but as the weeks progress, more and more food makes it into my weekly pickup. Maryanne's strawberry patch makes up for the lighter-packs during the first few weeks, and as the warmer days approch, the bags get much heavier with lots of variety. My favorite is the Giant Garlic. Kids love seeing where food comes from, and how it is grown, Maryanne always takes time with the younger consumers, and they have a whole new appreciation for their veggies!!!
