The best turkey ever -- really!

I really wanted to try a heritage turkey this year and found KG Acres Farm that was only a 2 hour drive for us. Despite driving in the snow and it turning into a 6 hour drive round trip, we were all thrilled with the turkey. It was truly a magic experience. The white meat eaters liked the dark meat and vice versa. Closer to duck than to turkey -- it was and experience I won't soon forget.
Laura & Giff made it very easy to order and to pick up. They were helpful with size issues and accommodating in every way.

KG Acre Turkey

We've had KG Acre two years in a row and both were great. The first was HUGE (27 lbs) and was still moist and tender. This year's was small (12 lbs) and also moist and tender. Very yummy!
I ate the whole turkey - by myself!

That's right folks - the whole bird. I'm not even a real turkey lover at that. Sure, I like cold cuts, turkey bacon, sausage and ham but these things don't actually taste like real turkey. My bird was between 9 - 10 lbs and I brined it the night before in a simple sugar-salt brine. I let it come to room temp. then stuffed a compounded rosemary-maple butter between the skin and flesh and lightly salted the outside and cavity. As suggested, I cranked the oven up to about 450 f or so and it only took maybe and hour if even that. I personally prefer my cooked turkey cool from the frig so for a week straight, I dined on the most delicious moist turkey I've ever had - ever. I used the dark meat for a sweet potato stew served cold (of course) with a dollop of homemade cranberry sauce in the middle. Beautiful stew and the turkey really made a difference in the level of deliciousness. Every piece spooned up was like finding treasure. I will never buy a commercial turkey from a store again. The hospitality of the folks at KG Acres Farm made it even more enjoyable - I didn't even have to leave my house to get this bird. This was my first heritage bird and it exceeded all my expectations. Most amazing turkey EVER!

My partner and I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time ever and our parents met at said gathering for the first time ever. Needless to say, we were really depending on the turkey to pull through for us, and pull through it did!
I chose to brine the turkey and then roasted it uncovered and unbasted. It cooked perfectly! The skin was crisp, the extra fat that comes with being a heritage breed kept the meat moist throughout, and there was a flavor that I have never had with turkey that I can only assume is lost when turkeys are selectively bred for other traits to be the kind available at the grocery. My Dad, who isn't always forthcoming with compliments and seldom speaks in hyperbole, said it was the best turkey he'd ever had. That's saying something!
Besides the turkeys, we are regular buyers of herb seedlings and veggies from KG Acres at Indy's farm markets. One of the things that drew us to the markets is the ability to know the farmers. As it is, they are often busy or not all that interested in our city-kid attempts at bonding. We have had such a good time chatting with Laura at the markets that we keep going back again and again much to the detriment of our schedule because I usually end up talking longer than I have.
We'll definitely keep buying veggies and plants from KG Acres and can't imagine another source for turkey. We bought two and had eaten them both between Thanksgiving and the new year.

I purchased 2 doz. eggs today and they are wonderful. There is nothing like a truly farm fresh egg. Laura was very friendly and I highly recommend this farm!
