This was my 2nd year with the Lacey J Ranch and it was an entirely different experience from the 1st year. 2013 was not a great growing season, but we managed to get plenty of variety in our boxes, only missing 1 week (which Jim, the farmer, stated was the first time it had ever happened) due to hail damage. 2014 had a slow start and only went down hill, with several weeks of no delivery.

For most of August, September and October, there was little to no communication as to what was going on - most weeks, I wasn't even sure if I should bother stopping to pick up my box. I attempted to reach out to Jim 4 or 5 times throughout the season, all with absolutely no response. I also purchased an egg share and a half bread share - egg delivery stopped in August (no explanation) and there were several weeks without bread delivery.

Needless to say, I will be looking for a new farmer next season. I am understanding of weather problems, but this was not all weather related.

Disappointed with lack of variety, poor communication

My family's experience with this CSA has been quite a disappointment. We didn't get nearly the variety in vegetables we expected; each week the box contained more of the same stuff. It was the summer of Napa Cabbage, cucumbers, and corn. There were a few weeks where we got some nice things, like a small watermelon, or some miniature eggplant, but the boxes were mostly full of too much of the same thing. Some of the quality was also questionable; with the exception of a couple early on, the tomatoes were woody, even after sitting on a bag on the counter to ripen. That was another thing, we were sometimes given veggies that were not even close to being ripe, so we couldn't use them until the next week. By then, we had more of the same, and things ended up going to waste because we couldn't use them quick enough. We also bought an egg share, but haven't received that since August. I've tried to contact the farmer 4 times this season, and never got a response. I'd stay away from this CSA.

I was very excited to try a CSA this year as I have friends and family who have been doing this for years and rave about their CSA's vegetables and fruit. I found this farm online and went off the reviews. Well, this has been a very unsatisfactory experience. I can understand and accept weather issues as a factor in the amount of food in the boxes. However, week after week there are more reasons/excuses as to why we are receiving light boxes; weather was just one reason. Never once was there an offer to supplement because of the lack of crops. My family and friends who go through other CSAs have been compensated with food from other farms and even cooking oils when their boxes were light. I do not believe I will try another CSA as it seems my money will be best spent going to Farmers Markets. I have been very hesitant of sharing my review because I keep hoping it will improve. Maybe the remainder of the year will improve and I can update this post. Until then I remain disappointed.

I'll be posting my own review, but I agree with you. This has just not been on par with other CSA experiences. Today we got yet another email that said the "makeup box" is delayed another week. I'm expecting next week to get an email that says there will be no makeup. We also bought the egg share this year and haven't received eggs since August. I've emailed Jim multiple times with no response. Definitely will not be back next year.

Please don't give up on CSA shares entirely. Contact some other farmers.

I love having a farmer. This will be our third year and although at first it was a little overwhelming with so many vegetables to get thru before the next box arrived it got easier as I got smarter. Now I enjoy the challenge. When the sweet corn overflows we grill it and freeze for winter chilies and soups (YUM). And ground cherries? Didn't know what they were but found a salsa recipe that featured them and now I anxiously await that treasure in this year's box. I still can't get excited about beets though, my apologies to beet lovers. Wishing sunshine and timely rain to all farmers everywhere - Thanks for your hard work!

We Love it! We highly recommend it.

This will be our 3rd season with Lacey J Ranch and we love it. I can hardly wait for the new season to begin. Each week is just like Christmas.

We have tried 2 other CSA farms and after mixed experiences at both have found our CSA farm at Lacey "J" Ranch. The produce has been excellent,the recipes very helpful and the farm events fun. It's been great to bring the kids to the events and open houses to see how and where their food is grown and to pickup extra vegetables above and beyond what comes in the box throughout the season.

The kids enjoy eating food that comes from the farm that they get to visit and has made it easier to get them to try new vegetables. I also like that I get to try new things that I can't find in the store and to learn about the health benefits from even common vegetables that I was unaware of.

The weekly e-mails are very informative and help my kids as well as myself better understand what it takes to raise vegetables all season.

It's easy to get so wrapped up in our fast paced lives that it's easy to forget what the weather was like 3 days ago let alone 2 to 3 months ago when many crops were planted. I've now become more in tune with the weather and am intrigued to see on my Bing weather page how we are now breaking high and low records almost daily that were only set within the last 10 years.

I highly recommend Lacey "J" Ranch to anyone who is considering a CSA whether it be their first experience or are looking for a farm to call their own.

We chose this farm after finding ourselves buying from their stand at the farmer's market every week. He always had such wonderful items and just the items we wanted. Why not let them create a box for us each week and go with that, right? Wrong.

The quality of the produce we found in the box was FAR less than the quality we had become accustomed to at the stand. Nearly everything in the box seemed to be wilty or starting to "turn", while the stand at the farmer's market continued to have robust, fresh produce. I really felt as though the boxes were an opportunity for him to get rid of what hadn't sold after being displayed for days at various farmer's market locations.

The weekly emails mostly contained a combination of "just wait, the boxes will get better" assurances and complaints of the weather being too dry, too hot, too wet, etc. Granted, it is stereotypical for farmers to lament the weather, but I grew up on a small family farm (homesteaded in 1863). All my life I've heard farmers talk. Not every year is picture perfect and some years different crops aren't going to be stellar producers, I get that. His continuous complaints really were over the top. (And not at all evident in the abundant offers found at his stand at the farmer's market.)

I won't be buying a share this year.

I will instead spend my money each week at the farmer's market, likely from a stand just down the row from his. I love the concept of buying a share, but really did not feel that this was a positive experience at all.

Our farm prides itself on quality and food safety is of paramount importance us. I was so surprised to see this note that I went back through over 2000 emails and our written call log for the season and this member had never contacted us, returned a survey or showed up at any of several open house events to share her experience and to pick up extra produce that was available to all our members. We consider our members as an extended family and only want only the best for them. If we do make a mistake by chance and we are only human then we certainly will make it right but that means that we have to be aware of it. We value everyone's opinion because it allows us to be what you want us to be. However, it is impossible to act on it in a timely manner if the concern is not brought to our direct attention promptly not 3 months after the season ends in an out of place posting. These are a just a few comments from other members who pick up at this location: Hamner, Katie 8/23/12 Jim - Your corn is the best! I've not had sweet corn that good in a very long time!!!! Thank you, Katie Hamner Angela Morris 6/13/12 Thank you! We had an amazing dinner last night with fresh eggs and greens - FANTASTIC!! We ate strawberries for dessert and felt like we had had the meal of kings. Angela Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. Our farm has found success through growing for two distinct markets: CSA & Farmers Market. Our CSA which is 95% of our business is our first priority and growing for other markets allows us to reduce the risks usually associated with a CSA membership. For example, we don't grow just enough cucumbers for just our CSA membership, we grow enough to sell at farmers markets as well. Therefore, if there is a problem in the field, we can send those cucumbers originally intended for market to our CSA members & they don't miss out. However, at the farmers market on that given day there would be less of that product or maybe none at all. Produce that has gone to market is never shuffled into a members share but we do donate it to one or two local food shelves each week. Our produce is sorted so that the first and best goes into our members shares. We did have the misfortune of hiring a couple of employees during the season last year that were passionate about collecting their checks but didn't share our passion about our CSA members and quality control. Everyone deserves an opportunity to learn from their mistakes or to make things right. Since they were unwilling to learn from theirs we provided them the learning experience to find out where their passion lays and to collect a check elsewhere else. We are also hiring a farm manager this year to oversee production, harvest, deliveries and farm safety. A CSA experience can be many things to different members. Quality produce is only the start of this relationship of the member and their farm of choice. For any relationship to grow and last there needs to be communication both ways. At the minimum that would be in a newsletter the farm and a survey back from you the member. Just like one size fits all doesn't work in clothing. One newsletter doesn't fit everyone's needs in terms of information needs or sense of humor. I think that it is very important to relay what is going on at the farm and what I might take for granted or feel is mundane like the weather, 20 hour days or irrigating around the clock members find very interesting because they want to understand the lifestyle and how their food is gown. Some members tell me that they really enjoy the news letters with recipes, food facts and snippets of the farm life. Some members don't read their emails or couldn't care less what is going on at the farm. Yes, everyone is aware that 2012 was the worst drought since 1936 but does that mean that I shouldn't mention it. I do think that back to back 5 inch rains are a freak event and members should know that sometimes due to the timing of events such as this we may have to replant several times to get a certain crop. On average between a 75 to 80% of our members return each year which tells us that we are doing something right. We know that not everyone will find a home in our farm but we continue to make changes to our farm based upon the feedback we receive.

This season (2014) we had more of the same emails. "Just wait, things will get better." They really didn't get better. And I could not get ahold of the farmer. After my fourth attempt with no response, I gave up.
