Can't wait for next year!!
By: Sue Ann Larabell (Oct 30, 2012)
As a first-year venture, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but with three weeks yet to go, I can report that I have been very pleased with the quantity and the variety of foods offered. It appears that this was a really good year for both tomatoes and peppers, and with multiple varieties of each, my larder is well stocked for winter. I have discovered that I like kale, don't like swiss chard and have very much enjoyed the herbs, arugula, onions, garlic, bok-choi, and salad greens (complete with edible flowers). Early season baskets included eggplant, peaches and kohlrabi as well as other items I can not remember now - I just know that I didn't hate anything and loved being able to share my items with family members and preserving care packages for my college students.
A great benefit of City Commons CSA is not only that it supports urban farming within the city of Detroit (which I staunchly support), but also the fact that I received an email every week advising what was in the current box and providing great tips on how to prepare as well as how to preserve the harvest.
Thank you to all of the farmers that make up City Commons CSA - your attention to detail and extra assistance regarding the couple of special requests that occurred are very appreciated. I look forward to renewing this association next year.
