Abbott's Garden
By: Lynne Wardach    (May 5, 2009)

I've been a customer of the Abbott's Garden CSA for several years now, buying both eggs and vegetables. We've found Sue and John to be friendly and accomodating and we've become good friends. My children have been to the farm to visit the chickens and to help pick berries on occasion and have had tremendous fun. (Sue spoils them nearly rotten). The quality of the produce is always wonderful and the eggs are the finest my family has ever eaten. My children (we have 5 ), won't even touch other eggs now that we've had those from Sue's hens,(especially Amelia the wonder-chicken). We've always been dealt with fairly, whether it's about quality, price or personal accomodation, and Sue has been most generous in arranging my family's pick-up schedule. (Once, she even drove to my house with eggs & veggies when my kids were sick!). I like knowing that she & John are so committed to pesticide free produce and sustainable farming practices and that I can feed my children their vegetables and eggs with confidence. I've learned alot too. Sue is very generous with information and doesn't mind sharing her horticultural knowledge. Her newsletters to her customers are very informative, not only about Abbott's Garden CSA news, but about the nature of farming and even politics as it applies to our food!

Bottom line, we love our CSA. Give 'em a try!

My review was removed
By:    (Nov 29, 2008)

My review was removed without any explanation or justifcation so I will check back periodiclly to see if it is still up. This was that bad an experience for me.

Well I tried to work with Sue and Abbott farms, (and I choose my words carefully here) I found her to be arrogant, nasty and out right rude. At the end of my post I am coping 2 emails to substantiate this point. The second week I missed her at her designated spot, My wife and I bought a new car and it took longer then expected. Every week from that day I met Sue in a mutually acceptable place that was on her way home. After missing that first time she made it plain that there were no second chances, as she said my produce went back into the fold. Last week I missed our appointment due to a job interview. She didnÂ?t even have the decency to call and see if something happened. She just decided that because I did not contact her as to a second pickup time that I was no longer a viable customer and was no longer going to receive anything. She did email me something to that extent, but not having checked my email between that time and the next delivery I was caught waiting and waiting for her. When I call her to find out if something had happened she snapped on me yell and screaming, cussing and would not listen to anything that I tried to say. Then she hung up on me. When I called back she wouldnÂ?t answer. So I left her a massage that I would take her to court. She email me another message that you can read for your self.

As to the quality, there were several times that I did not receive what was on the list and she passed it off as that was for the half shares; that I had already got mine; which I didnÂ?t. The portions promised were never to standard either, hardly enough for a family of 2 no less 4 like she claimed. I did receive 7 pound squash and zucchini that were not good for much of anything, onions that were more like pearl onions, not even enough for and egg sandwich and more Chinese cabbage then I ever cared to eat.

Then there was the one time I sent my wife to pick up the delivery and she called to confirm the place and time and sue left a rude message as to getting sick and tired of our attitude, all she had to do was confirm a time and place.

Needless to say I would not recommend Abbott Gardens CSA.

Lewis

Lew, My apologies for blowing up on you on the phone; however you pushed my last nerve with your attitude and perception, hence the result. See below the message sent to you on 9/9/08. You weren't available for pickup on 9/8, no contact was attempted by you to advise this, no other call was made to arrange an alternate pickup, and frankly, I'd had enough of babysitting you. 30 other families didn't seem to have a problem with their weekly or biweekly pickups, and when there was a miss, they made arrangements promptly. I no longer had time to coddle you, what with running the CSA, a farmer's market, a garden, a household, wo

Sue & John Abbott says:    (Jan 5, 2009)

Sorry to say there is one in every bunch, and this was the one. He was extremely high-maintenance, requiring constant reminders to pickup, etc. I finally decided to terminate him as life was too short to babysit a grown man. It's ironic that 30 other families had no problem with our service, quality of produce, or delivery schedule. Such is life. For any questions or clarification, please feel free to email me! Enjoy, Sue Abbott

I have been a CSA member for 2 years and the produce is the freshest and best I've ever had. Just as importantly for me, Sue and John are committed to using only sustainable growing practices which not only makes for a more nutritious food supply, but is much better for the soil and environment. I highly recommend stopping by if you ever have the chance--but she's not kidding, she'll put you to work!
