Shelton Herb Farm: more than my favorite place to buy herbs
By: linda mooth    (Oct 12, 2009)

I love Meg Shelton's herbs....the lettuces and other bedding plants are superior as well! I always check out the seasonal offerings and unusual plants she offers whenever I am in the Wilmington area. Besides the plants she provides, Meg is a wealth of information, enthusiasm and networking. It is a real treat to take one of her classes or to converse one on one! You are so fortunate to have such a well respected grower in your area!

A True Local Gem
By: James Bridges    (Sep 22, 2009)

Recently I took a trip to visit Shelton Herb Farm to buy various plants for my herb garden at home. Many of my friends had visited Shelton's and had recommended that I pay the farm a visit. Shelton's definately lived up to its reputation. The variety of herbs grown at this farm was tremendous and the selection thereof was wonderful; there was everything from salad greens, traditional culinary herbs, and uncommon medicinals. I found everything I was looking for and more! The service was also great; the young man and woman working that day were especially helpful in answering any questions I had and were quick to find any plants I inquired about. If you are in the area, Shelton's is a definate place to stop by and check out. Located just off of Hwy. 17, Shelton's is tucked away just waiting to be discovered by seasoned gardeners and beginning growers alike. I'm sure glad I found this farm and I'm am sure to be returning for years to come. Thanks!

2009 must be a bad year
By: amy powell    (Apr 28, 2009)

I made my annual trip to Sheltons Herb farm last week. I was so sad to see the selection was poor.No parsley , no basil no tomatoes or peppers. The green houses are empty and what is in them is drying out and diseased.I was used to buying flats of herbs and veggies spending hundreds of dollars each year. This year I spent only $38.00That is all I could find worth buying. I am wondering if she is taking all the best selection to the Farmers Market in Wilmington leaving the shoppe depleted. I am saddened by the lack of selection this year .

2009 has been a busy year. I was certainly disheartened to receive such a bad review. Mid April hits us in a mad rush. Riverfront and Poplar Grove Farmers' Markets start up. I supply a truck load of herbs for the NC Unit HSA sale in Greensboro the 3rd week of April. Local plant shops and non-profit groups buy wholesale from us. Sales at the farm are flat out. It also gets hot and we try to move plants out of the greenhouses, leaving behind plants that don't look good. Sorry that you caught us in disarray. It happens. I am the grower and you are seeing starter plants, cold nipped plants, a large green house that lost heat on a very cold night in March, outside over-wintered plants yet to break dormancy, and a sales area from which a lot of plants were sold and moved out in a few weeks. That's April. I remember coming back from Greensboro and pulling over plants from our propagation houses that were full of replacements. I am so sorry that you caught us looking sparce and unkempt. I know how hard we work during April. Still, no excuses can make up for a poor showing. I am the grower and when we run short supply on some plants it may take a bit longer to replace them. I stand over the seed and propagation flats and say "grow!", but they take their own sweet time. Sorry you had such a bad day out here. When you come again, please ask and if we don't have what your are looking for maybe someone can let you know when that plant will be ready for sale or go find it for you. If you come again I hope your visit is more productive and agreeable for you.
