Rhiza Food Co. was established in May 2012 on Candler Street in Highland Park, Michigan as a subsidiary of Distributed Power, LLC. It is a four-season, for-profit urban production and teaching farm rooted in triple bottom line outcomes:
1) production is managed in a beyond-organic, ecological manner with smallest environmental impact;
2) staff are committed to educating local community members in the technical aspects agriculture production systems; and
3) profits are used to train and hire additional staff at a living wage and expand production capacity.
Currently, Rhiza Food Co. grows vegetables, fruits and herbs in a 24x60 passive solar hoop house, a 60x80 outdoor field and has an 8-tray indoor microgreens production space. Plans for value-added products using "estate-grown" produce are underway with an expected production start date of Fall 2012. Products will be sold at Highland Park Farmers Market (beginning August 6th, 2012) and to metro-Detroit chefs, caterers and local residents.
