Round Mountain Organics (RMO) is a small high-altitude farm in the West Elk Mountains of Colorado just 10 miles south of Crested Butte. We plant whatever will grow at 8,500 feet at the base of Round Mountain. Bountiful harvests of salad and cooking greens, brassicas, roots, flowers and herbs can be found at RMO July through September. Our happy hens give us eggs daily. The whole farm including a yurt, strawbale house and year-round greenhouse are all powered by solar photovoltaic panels and a wind generator. The power from the sun and wind are stored in a bank of 12 12-volt batteries. Although Round Mountain Organics is not "certified organic" we feel our organic methods are far above and beyond what the National Organic Standards allow. We use the Biodynamic planting calendar Stella Natura and have had much success with it. We sustain our bountiful harvests with yearly amendments to the soil of cow manure from our rancher neighbor and compost collected from over 40 households and a few businesses in Crested Butte. This year for the first time we will incorporate cover crops into our yearly routine. The farm is run by its owner, Nancy Wicks, and four interns which reside on the farm from May 1- October 31. Tours are available by appointment: (970)641-4742. Future plans for the farm include the establishment of a non-profit corporation called Round Mountain Institute to promote sustainable living through organic gardening, alternative building and living off-the-grid. Please feel free to be in touch with me through the phone or e-mail. I'd love to hear from you. Nancy Wicks
