(Ruta graveolensRUTACEAE)

Valued as an ornamental for its attractive leaf shape and blue-green foliage. Medicinal: Though rue has many traditional medicinal uses, the novice best leave it alone, and grow it only for its pleasing ornamental qualities. Rue contains rutin, a flavonoid which reduces capillary fragility and was a traditional remedy for failing eyesight. Warning: Never intentionally rub the leaves on the skin (to repel mosquitoes). This combined with sun exposure can cause a serious photo-sensitivity reaction that may last for months.
