Rusty Plough Farm is a small family farm, growing certified organic vegetables, flowers and berries, as well as eggs from our free-range hens and ducks, and heritage pork. Our farm is located in Ulster County, NY, nestled between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Catskills. It consists of 40 acres, including: crop fields; wild blueberry stands; woodlots; a pond; a maze of old stone walls; an old rusty plough; wild turkeys, deer, hawks, squirrels; the occasional bear; multitudes of frogs and newts; Sneakers the barncat; and the house, barn, and greenhouses.
The land has been in our family since 1986. We have been growing vegetables for our own use since then and have been marketing since 1996. We have always followed organic methods of production, working to build up the health of the soil, without the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. The farm is now certified by NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC. We try to approach farming, and our lives, in a wholistic way, working with natural systems and considering long range effects of all we do. We feel strongly that our land has been given to us to take care of as long as we are able. Our task is to use this gift wisely, sharing its wealth with others and leaving it healthier than we found it, while providing our family with a just return for our labor.
We strongly believe in the need for a local small farm economy. Today, as huge farms find it hard to make ends meet, the number of small farms, selling locally, is actually on the rise. Many of the fruits and vegetables available to consumers today are tasteless and lifeless, while local, freshly-picked produce is vibrant, flavorful and enticing. Children love our carrots and beans and turnips because they taste great, despite being vegetables! And local farms provide more than just food. They are an important thread in the larger fabric of community, jobs, economic vitality, just wages, open space, environmental responsibility and healthy eating. We offer a seasonal internship program, hoping to inspire and guide our future farmers. Rusty Plough Farm is a part of the fabric and we are honored to provide you with the highest quality, best-tasting products that we grow. As we all work together, the wealth of our regional food system will grow. Thanks for supporting us and being part of the solution!
