Richard & Thekla Sanford established the Sanford Winery & Vineyards in 1981. Bruno D'Alfonso became winemaker in 1983 making world class Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are produced from several well established vineyards in Santa Barbara County including the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. In 1997, Sanford Winery at the Rancho La Rinconada Ranch planted 125 acres of grapes; the ranch is located at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley. Sanford Vineyards were recently certified as organic growers though California Certified Organic Farmers. Though the wines are currently produced in leased space in Buellton, a new winery, built entirely of adobe bricks, is currently under construction. Current annual production is 50,000 cases. The distincitve Sanford labels feature a new wildflower each year by artist, Sebastian Titus. Tasting room hours are from 11:00am to 4:00pm daily. Picnic area available and no charge for tasting.
