This pelt is from an older Jacob sheep who was originally born on our farm and was one of our favorites in her prime. Her name was Flopsy and we still have one of her lambs, even though I now raise Icelandics instead of Jacobs.

It is 47 inches long, measured on the center line and about 32 inches wide. It has a nice soft fleece with a springy feel to it and has been brushed out by the processor and trimmed around the edges. The length is about 2 inches but shorter where it's been trimmed.

Jacob pelts can be decorative or used for various other things. I like the shorter pelts as car seat covers, they could be used as rugs, throws or for babies to rest on or as pads for wheel chair seats. This pelt could also be cut and made into crafts or clothing, but I think it would make a wonderful rug because of it's size, shape and fleece length.

This one has very few defects or holes, although there is a pattern of small holes in the skin made by the tanner. It was tanned by Mint City Tanning in Michiganand is made to be washable, but can be dry cleaned if desired. Water washing per the instructions from Bucks county tends to make the skin hard and it takes time to get the skin back to it's supple texture, but it can be done with manual working and stretching.

We raise our animals on our small family farm. The sheep have access to pasture most of the time and are only fed grain and hay in extreme weather or as treats.

We raise our animals on a small family farm. The sheep have access to pasture most of the time and are only fed grain and hay in extreme weather. We also raise turkeys and chickens who are outside on pasture in the summer/fall. We breed our own heritage turkeys and let them raise thier own babies when possible. We strive to keep our animals healthy and happy with as much freedom as possible while keeping them safe.
