Shelterbelt Farm is the pride and joy of the Modisher family: Craig, Erica and their young children Rowan and Phoenix. We're located in the scenic rolling hills of Caroline, NY, in the Finger Lakes region just southeast of Ithaca. In 2010 we began producing chickens and turkeys on abandoned overgrown land, wanting to restore it to pasture. Now the farm is home to three generations of Modishers, pastured pigs, turkeys, sheep, and bees. We will eventually be joined by a herd of 100% grass-fed cattle, flocks of ducks and geese, and year-round vegetables grown in unheated greenhouses.
We believe that all-natural production practices, superior taste and quality, and good environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand. We feed our pigs and turkeys certified organic grains in addition to their pasture diet, but our sheep are 100% grass-fed.
In 2013 we are raising pastured turkeys and pork, and producing raw honey. We think of our critters as walking fertility builders. Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys will be ready for harvest soon! Moved every 3 days, these happy birds have feasted on any grasshopper unlucky enough to cross their paths, in addition to trampling and fertilizing our pasture.
Other than foraging, the only feed we've provided is certified organic grain ration.
