Shizen Farms

In the spring of 2010, Rubissow Family Vineyards decided to remove an acre of merlot vines that weren't producing wine grapes to their premium standards on their organically-farmed 45 acre Napa Valley estate.

A land lease deal was struck for that grapeless acre and Shizen Farms was born.

Organic compost, chicken manure and fish emulsion are the only amendments we add to these mineral-rich Mt. Veeder soils. Our insectary plants and companion planting methods ensure we support a healthy beneficial insect population, so we have no need for pesticides, synthetic or otherwise.

We grow heirloom, open-pollinated annual and perennial varieties, started from seed at our farm. Heirloom varieties are bred for the best flavors, as opposed to transport toughness and shelf-life staying power qualities.
