Sliced pieces of starfruit in light syrup.
Star fruit, also called carambola has many names.
Early English travelers called Coromandel gooseberry.
It is believed to have originated in Ceylon and the
Moluccas but it has been cultivated in southeast
Asia and Malaysia for many centuries. There are
2 distinct classes of carambola, the smaller, sour
type, and the larger, sweet type.In 1935, seeds
from Hawaii were planted at the University of
Florida's Agricultural Research Center and a
selection from the resulting seedlings was
propagated during the 1940's and 1950's and
released under the name 'Golden Star.
Ripe carambolas are eaten out-of-hand, sliced
and served in salads, or used as garnish on
avocado or seafood. They are also cooked in
puddings, tarts, stews and curries. In Malaya,
they are often stewed with sugar and cloves.
The ripe fruits are sometimes dried.
