Lovers of traditional "real" foods unite! Join Slow Food International, headquartered in Bra, Italy, a non-profit organization comprised of 60,000 gastronomes in 35 countries. The enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to the pursuit of happiness. The US branch of Slow Food is an educational organization dedicated to stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production; to the revival of the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture and community; to the invigoration and proliferation of regional, seasonal culinary traditions; and to living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life. Local chapters of Slow Food are called Conviviums. There are over sixty conviviums in the United States with more than 10,000 members. Slow Food Santa Cruz Convivium II started in 2002. We savor epicurean delights, enjoy fine food, wine tasting, and culinary classes, regional gourmet specialties and we support local "heirloom" crops. Santa Cruz is an unusual area, in which sophisticated food lovers live near some of the finest food and wine-producing areas in the world. We are working to support the enjoyment of this rich environment by putting local small food producers together with sophisticated consumers. We help our members and friends to locate the freshest, finest foods available, outside traditional marketing channels and we help producers to find a market. For example, among many others, we run year-round reports on farmers markets and stands on our web site at www.SlowFoodSantaCruz. org, highlighting seasonal foods at their finest.
