Smith and Son Farm

We are a small family farm located in the Kettle River Valley near Orient, WA. Semi-retired, we enjoy growing our own food along with some excess to provide the community with fresh, quality produce at a reasonable cost to cover our expenses. We practise rotating our land from pasture to animal grazing to non-ground contact vegetable production to ground contact vegetable production and then back to pasture, thereby giving the land rest two out of every four years. We are committed to growing naturally, and although certifiable, we choose not to certify as organic with the USDA. We do not use any pesticides or herbicides, neither conventional chemical or those certified for organic use. Pest control is done by hand, using water, or the introduction of natural beneficial controls. All weeding is done by hand or mechanical means. In addition to the animal inputs for fertilising we are experimenting with naturally derived marine/guano foliar fertilisers.

We raise registered/purebred Hereford Hogs along with some crossed with Duroc/York/Hamp crosses. Weaners are available twice a year, occasionally we have some butcher hogs available.

I have purchased a lot of vegetables and berries from this farm. What I appreciate most besides the full flavors are their conscientious care that they take to grow these pesticide and herbicide free foods.... [more]
