Smoke Ridge Organics

Smoke Ridge Organics has a passion for good food and puts tons of effort into obtaining it! We are looking for members for our CSA who enjoy nature and want to instill thoughtful care of it into their family lives. We work 10 acres on a rotational basis between vegetables, a 3 sisters organic heirloom corn maze, pastured chicken and eggs, strawberries, wheat and oat fields and other grains as they spark our interest.

Currently our vegetable garden is 1 1/2 acres in size, we pasture Cornish Chickens and have a flock of 40 mixed laying hens. Our poultry takes care of most insect pests, including the heritage Narrangaset turkeys and our peafowl. We have 3 established pear trees, an apple tree, a peach tree, and are working on building up our concord grape arbour, red raspberry patch, rhubarb, asparagus and blueberry patches. We have been planting blackberry hedges along the pasture fences for wildlife benefit and have installed a 300 foot bayberry hedge for candlemaking.

This year we have 2 milking cows. an Ayrshire named Isabella and a Jersey named Brulee. We have 7 cashmere goats eating down a brushlot and are establishing a merino wool cooperative with other fibers such as cotton, angora, and silk. We plow our fields with our Halflinger Team of horses, Molly and Lady, instead of a tractor. There is a horse rescue operation at the farm for disabled or geriatric horses. Our tamworth pigs enjoy helping us rototill the garden and prepare it for plowing. We raise grass fed beef, and harvest on a regular basis. We are expanding our tree fruit operation to include apricots, plums, cherries, and more peach and apple varieties. We are also purchasing for planting this season: currant, elderberry, and cranberry bushes.

The manager has studied several methods of gardening; including biodynamic, rodale, square foot gardening, lasagna, permaculture, and companion planting. We have found the best ways to work with our fertile clay soil, and are constantly improving it through adding organic matter and compost. We minimize the need to work the soil through cover crops and intensive mulching. Farm beauty is a priority and we plant flowers in between as many crops as possible!

Smoke Ridge Butterfly Farm raises organic butterflies for ecological release and hosts field trips through our butterfly garden and conservatory. There are numerous patches of wild land kept open for butterfly conservation every year. We love to promote native New York species, especially the smaller, less noticed field butterflies that are so often obliterated by orchard spraying in the region. We grow and provide host and nectar plants at our farm for those interested in promoting butterflies in their backyards.
