Depot Studios is a nonprofit in North Central Minnesota whose mission is to provide income opportunities in our tourist economy. For three years we have been selling products made, locally, in homes and home studios and at a production site in our Mainstreet building. We are across the street from the Mille Lacs Area Food Co-op, which has been run continuously by volunteers since 1978. Locally produced honey, maple syrup, and wild rice are always available. From time to time shell beans and produce are available, too.

This year (2005) we have a VISTA person helping us to develop farmers' "garden" markets in the three towns along our corridor. We are practicing under the "Pickle Law" of Minnesota to train people in the production of value added home processed or baked food products.

We provide opportunities to anyone living along an east west corridor from U.S. Interstate #35 at Sandstone, MN to State Highway #169 at Onamia, MN.

Our studio is a place where people who sell their handmade work may also teach their skills to others. The year around presence on Mainstreet has given people an opportunity to have product available to their customers, even as they are at home gardening, farming, "making" a living.
