INFUSION: Pour 6oz of boiling water over 1-2 tsp of dried flower & leaves in non-metal cup. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Drink while warm. A general dosage is 1 cup of tea, up to 3 times a day.
OIL EXTRACT:Put fresh Saint John's Wort flowers & leaves in a glass jar with sunflower or olive oil. Seal, airtight, & place on a sunny windowsill for 4 to 6 weeks, shake daily. When the oil turns red, strain the mixture through cheesecloth & store in a dark container away from light. This oil maintains its potency for 2 years or more. Use as a rub for painful joints, varicose veins, muscle strain, arthritis & rheumatism. As a compress, it can help to heal wounds & inflammation & relieve the pain of deep bruising.
SALVE: Using a double boiler, add 1 oz of grated beeswax to 2 oz of warmed prepared oil extract (above) & mix until melted. Pour into a glass jar & allow to cool. Keep refrigerated up to 1 yr. The salve is used in treating burns, wounds & soothing painful muscles. It is also a good skin softener. May be prepared with calendula extract to put on bruises.
May also be prepared as a tincture.
