The yellow flowering tops of the St John's Wort plant have been historically used as a nervine when taken internally. As a restorative nerve tonic, it has been used in the treatment of anxiety, neuralgia, sciatica and tension. More recently, St John's Wort has been used to treat anxiety and irritablility triggered by menopausal changes. It is not recomended, however, when there is marked depression.
