Burgandy Okra Seeds

(Abelmoschus esculentus)

Open polinated. 60 to 80 days, depending on how warm it is where you garden. Delicious pods are abundant on this decorative plant. Burgandy pods and stems, green leaves w/burgandy veins, and creamy yellow blossoms with burgandy throats make for a delightful ornamental edible. Pods are slender and best harvested when 4" or shorter. Keep plant picked so it will keep producing. Okra loves heat. It is an excellent crop for southern gardens, as it will produce right through the heat of summer. We like our okra stir fried over high heat in a little oil. This keeps the "slime" from developing. It has a delicious flavor and a tender crispness. Add sweet onions, garlic, red peppers, and basil for a real treat. We eat some this almost every day during the dog days of summer when nothing else is producing. Northern gardeners should start seeds indoors 5 weeks before last frost to get a head start. Germinated at 92%.

Cultural Requirements:

Soil:Adaptable. Okra grows big and needs lots of nitrogen. We work alfalfa meal into the soil prior to planting and side dress with composted chicken manure in mid summer.
Propagation / Germination:Northern gardeners can start seeds indoors 5 weeks before last frost and plant out after last frost, 3' apart. In warmer areas direct seed after last frost. Plant seeds 3/4" deep, 4 per foot. Thin to 1 plant every 4 to 5 feet in the row. Plants get big!
