Beet Bull's Blood - Heirloom

BULL'S BLOOD - HEIRLOOM Beets Latin name: Beta vulgaris

Selected by seedsman Kees Sahin in the Netherlands from the French variety Crapaudine for the darkest-colored leaves. The juice from the beets is used to make the only red food coloring allowed by Swedish law. This is the most uniform strain available. Remarkably sweet, 35 days for baby leaf tops, or 55 days for edible roots.

Plant at a soil temp of 65-75 degrees. Seed depth: 1/2" Seed spacing: 2" Thin: 4-6" Row spacing: 20-24 Days to Germination: 10-20 Days to Harvest: 55-65

Seed saving Instructions: Biennial. Beets will cross-pollinate. Varieties must be separated by 1/2 mile from other beets the second year when going to seed. Beets are fairly frost tolerant and will overwinter in mild climates if well mulched. In northern climates trim leaves to 2" and store roots in slightly damp sawdust or sand in a root cellar over the winter. Roots store 4-6 months at 32-40 degrees F. Replant in the spring and harvest seed heads when dry.

I first say these beets growing at Fort Hays, Kansas in a garden that had the same seeds planted that the soldiers planted years ago.
