Zingiber zerumbet rhizome

(Zingiber zerumbet)

Deciduous ornamental ginger that blooms every year, even in containers! Yellow flowers emerge from between the scales of the inflorescence and in late summer the whole "cone" turns brilliant red. Makes a great long-lasting cut flower. Fluid squeezed from the "cone" makes a fragrant hair rinse or body wash. Can be container-grown in any climate. The leaves are cooked with food to add flavor and the ground rhizome is used as an anti-inflammatory poultice.
