Story Hill Farm

At Story Hill Farm, we use organic practices such as companion planting, sheet mulching, composting, cover crops, heirloom and organic seeds, livestock weed management, water-conserving drip irrigation and beneficial insects. We are in the process of transitioning over to Permaculture: (PERMAnent agriCULTURE or PERMAnent CULTURE) which is a sustainable design system stressing the harmonious interrelationship of humans, plants, animals and the Earth. Designing sustainable human habitats by following nature's patterns. This process is a long one which takes vision and planning. We are so excited for the changes that are happening and to see what they grow into in the future. This spring Josh and I began a new project which fits perfectly into our long term vision... we began 2 new mushroom beds and then along with Lily and Sage began to drill and hammer into place 300 pearl mushroom plugs into surrounding stumps. We are excited not only for a new yearly crop of tasty treats, but also to be creating a Mycological Landscaping. Mycological landscaping involves the cultivation of exotic mushrooms as beneficial companions to plants in gardens, lawns, or within woodlands. We have also began integrating Mycorrhizal fungi which are fungi that have developed a symbiotic (mutually beneficial) relationship with the root systems of living plants, from our garden vegetables all the way to our fruit trees, berry bushes and asparagus. Networks of mycorrhizal filaments envelop the seedling's root structure, greatly extending and enhancing (by a factor of several hundred to several thousand times) the growing plant's water- and nutrient-gathering abilities and protecting the plant from disease. We divert materials that would otherwise become part of the waste stream and utilize them for animal feed, compost materials, planters, sheet mulching, pathways and more! We strive to continually enrich our soil resources so the farm will be even more productive for future generations. We have tons of really big, happy worms here!
