Sunfield is a pioneering nonprofit organization with a broad community-building mission, inspired by the ideas of the early twentieth-century philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner. Our school offers classes for pre-K through grade eight where our students learn about the world through their whole beings - hands, heart, and mind, with the innovative and richly artistic Waldorf curriculum. We are certified organic, and use biodynamic farming techniques to tend the land and animals, and have eighty-one acres of fields bisected by wetlands and flanked by a forested hillside. Five acres are planted with vegetables, fruit, and cover crops. The remaining fields are hayed and grazed rotationally by our cows, sheep, goats, and chickens.
Sunfield has an active community education program, hosts interns throughout the season, and runs a 25 week Biodynamic CSA providing healthy food for our local community.
During our growing season, apprentices come to the farm to gain invaluable life skills and work experience, preparing to become the future caretakers of sustainable farms. Our Waldorf school children experience firsthand the benefits of respectfully caring for the land as they work side-by-side with the farmer throughout the school year. Volunteers and our youth program participants also contribute to the cultivation of the land.
We invite you to become part of our community! By investing in a CSA at Sunfield, not only do you directly support our ability to farm sustainably and create educational programs for youth, you become a part of the farm: with each week's share of biodynamically grown produce, you will receive a weekly newsletter with updates from the farm. The newsletter also assists with the kitchen end of the food chain; cooking tips and recipes make it easier to get to know (and like) new foods.
Beyond cultivating a relationship with new foods, we encourage you to cultivate a new relationship with food by following the food chain back to the soil. We invite members to come out for our seasonal festivals, to sign up for volunteer work shifts; we also hold regular 'farm parties' where you can come and check up on your veggies, pet the animals, touch the sweet-smelling dirt, pick wild salmonberries from the woods, and hang out with other members, the farmers and farm crew.
Enjoy 26 weeks of bountiful biodynamic veggies, fruits and herbs, all lovingly sown, tended and harvested by the farmers, interns and students at Sunfield Farm and Waldorf School. We also offer a bonus Thanksgiving Harvest to provide for your family feast, and a discounted 'Working Share' for those keen to get their hands dirty!
Pick up Wednesdays at the farm, a central site in Port Townsend, and potentially other local sites. Please contact us to sign-up, or for more information.
