Russian Mammoth sunflowers are the BIG ones! They grow up to 10 ' tall and 24 " across here in Iowa. Look at the size of the seed head compared to the clothespin, a diameter not uncommon with this variety... we've been growing and selling this special sunflower in our Local Harvest store for many years and it never fails to please.
These amazing sunflowers can be planted singly, as a border OR in a circle or square pattern which will grow into a fun "flower fort" for kids. Plant some flowering vines to climb up them (we also offer nice purple/magenta Morning Glory seeds in our LH store) and you'll have happy birds, butterflies AND children ~ and plenty of seeds to save for next year's garden. The seeds are large and edible.
This year we also offer Autumn Beauty Sunflower seeds, another beautiful heirloom sunflower we love to grow here.
Autumn Beauty sunflowers are also tall plants, but unlike Russian Mammoths they branch out and produce numerous multi-colored flowers on each branch ~ the flowers display shades of red, gold, yellow, orange & maroon, thus their name ~ really pretty and great for cutting, they last well in flower arrangements.
They're lovely to see in the garden, and birds and wildlife enjoy eating the seeds they produce.
