LocalHarvest is conducting a grassroots survey this fall, comparing the
price of local produce to that of the "shipped in" variety. There are many
good reasons to buy local food, and the benefits go far beyond price.
Freshness, quality, nutritional value, and the socioeconomic value of
buying directly from family farmers are all important reasons to buy local
produce. But with the economy the way it is, the price of food is on many
people's minds. It seems like a good time to explore the question of how
local compares on price alone.
We are asking people from all across the country to participate. If you
would like to do some comparison shopping and send us your data, please
read our Survey
Form and Instructions to learn more about the project.
Some farmers markets include produce that has been bought from some far
away location and is being re-sold at the market. Please avoid this
produce when you are gathering data for the survey! When in doubt, ask the
vendor where the product was grown.
We will begin compiling the nationwide data on December 1, so if you
would like to participate, please send us your price comparisons before
December 1!
