Sustainable Farms & Communities (SF&C) is a non-profit group of citizens and farmers based in Columbia, Missouri that supports local community by fostering economic development through education about food and farming.
SF&C is working in partnership with government, educational institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and businesses to build a permanent, self-sufficient, year-round pavilion to house the Columbia Farmers' Market. This project, called the Farmers Market Community Center, is intended to help ensure a safe, healthy local food supply, foster entrepreneurship that builds the local economy, and build a stronger community and environment for healthy living.
SF&C also partners with several local organizations and agencies in the Access to Healthy Foods Program that matches the food stamps presented to Columbia Farmers' Market Vendors to double their purchasing capability. This program served 35 families in the initial pilot year (2011) and plans to serve 200 WIC eligible families in 2012. Funding for the program is raised from multiple sources.
